Common types of notarizations
Acknowledgments
Acknowledgments ensure that the document’s signer is who they claim to be and has voluntarily signed it. Acknowledgments often are needed for documents concerning valuable assets, such as deeds, mortgages, and deeds of trust.
Signer(s) must personally appear at the time of notarization to be positively identified and to declare — or “acknowledge” — that the signature on the document is their own and that they signed willingly.
Jurats
Jurats allow a signer to swear or affirm that the contents of a document are true. Depending on the jurisdiction, it can also be known as an affidavit, a verification on oath, or an affirmation.
Signers must personally appear and sign in the presence of a notary. They must also speak aloud their promise— or “oath/affirmation”— that the statements in the document are true. If the contents are discovered to be untrue, they may be prosecuted for perjury.
Oaths/affirmations
An oath or affirmation is a solemn declaration with legal consequences that can be made before a notary.
While both oaths and affirmations are notarial acts that compel a person to tell the truth, an oath is a solemn, spoken pledge to God or a Supreme Being, while an affirmation is a spoken pledge made on the signer’s personal honor with no reference to a higher power.
Copy certification
This notary act confirms that a reproduction of an original document is a full, true, and accurate transcription or reproduction of the original. Documents requiring copy certification may include diplomas, driver’s licenses, leases, contracts, vehicle titles, Social Security cards, medical records, and bills of sale.
